Insight on idolatry I had this morning:
There are two levels to seeing our idolatry:
1) what/who do we want more than God? (ultimate desire)
2) what/who are we looking to deliver? (ultimate deliverer)
The ultimate desire and ultimate deliverer can be the same person/thing or they can differ. But both of those persons/things can be properly called “idols” if they are not the one God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
These two levels reveal two ways to worship God as well.
Father in heaven, I desire you more than everything else, more than anything else.
Father, I look to you to deliver me from myself and the evil and distractions of this world and draw me to yourself through Christ in the power of your Holy Spirit. You are trustworthy and faithful and I trust your goodness to me in Christ Jesus.
