What is the Gospel?
Jesus Christ is Lord over all (including L.A.), the God of the universe, the treasure of our lives, and the Chief Pastor of our church. He came from heaven to earth around 4 B. C. and died about A. D. 33 (about 1,979 years ago). He died for sinners as a substitute to save them from the wrath of God that we all deserve and then rose from the dead on the third day. He went back up to heaven, and gave his Spirit to people to form gospel communities (churches) that would tell others about him. Currently, he sits at the right hand of God the Father in majestic glory, intercedes for his followers, accompanies them in spirit as they go out into the world to make more of his followers, and prepares for his return when “the kingdom of this world [will] become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ.”

The gospel is God’s message to the world and it is the message about Jesus Christ. The message God wants all of us to hear, believe, and live our lives for is the news that Jesus, the Son of God, came into the world and lived the life we should have lived in perfect and joyful obedience to God the Father. He died the death we should have died and took the penalty for our sin on himself. He rose from the dead and took the penalty for our sin on himself. He rose from the dead on the third day defeating sin, Satan, and death and calls all men and women to turn away from their sin AND turn away from their religious efforts and goodness and instead trust in the Lord Jesus’ goodness, righteousness, and his death on the cross alone for their salvation.
